Surviving Spring Break

"I proved to myself that no matter the temptation, I will not yield."

Week 10 was probably the most challenging. My progress so far was unbelievable. My body fat had dropped almost 10 percentage points. I weighed 125 pounds. I could see the finish line straight ahead.

Five months before, six of my friends and I had booked plane tickets for spring break. Our destination: Orlando, Florida. At the time, I hadn't even begun to think about doing the Body-for-LIFE Challenge.

As the end of my Challenge approached, so did spring break. I was really nervous. What if I relapsed and partied with my friends or ate that late-night pizza? The night before we left, we ate at this really cool sports bar in Kansas City, where we were flying out from. My friends ordered an appetizer a huge stack of onion rings. I had to watch them eat for 10 minutes before our food arrived. The waiter brought out lots of pizza. And what did I eat? Grilled chicken breast with steamed broccoli, of course.

We arrived in Florida in mid-afternoon. We piled into a seven-passenger minvan and drove to my aunt's house. That afternoon, we decided to take a swim. For the first time since beginning the Challenge, I changed into a swimsuit. My friends were in awe of how my body looked, and I had the most outrageous feeling of happiness. It's a day I'll never forget.

I had rented a four-bedroom condo with a fully equipped kitchen. So I was able to prepare my food just like I did at home. We drove to Target and got our groceries for the week. I bought oatmeal, yogurt, chicken, tuna, broccoli, and many other healthy items to make sure I'd stay on track.

I'm proud to report that I resisted the food at Disney World. My aunt and uncle are both entertainers there, and, growing up, I went to Disney World just about every year. My favorite things to eat there are chicken fingers and french fries and ice cream. This visit, I skipped these treats. Yes, I was a little disappointed, but the changes in my body were worth the sacrifice.

On nights we stayed in and everyone else was drinking and having a good time, I drank water. One of the things I gave up for my Transformation is alcohol. Under its influence, I think I can eat anything I want. I knew there was no way to drink alcohol and have a hot body. So I just sat and enjoyed the company of my crazy friends while sipping my water.

Later in the evening, they would usually order pizza. I love pizza! But instead of indulging, I got a protein bar from my bag.

I also kept up with my workouts. The Gold's Gym in Orlando is the coolest gym I've ever seen. It is bright purple and so big. While I was lifting weights, I felt so good about the changing shape of my body that I hit a new High Point on the bench press, an exercise that sometimes scares me. I also took a Body Pump class and did two days of cardio. On two other days, I ran outside. I loved that gym so much that I probably overdid it a little.

The thing I'm proudest about is this: I did not cheat the entire week! I held my head high and focused on the results I was getting. This was a huge accomplishment for me. I proved to myself that no matter the temptation, I will not yield. As we left Florida, I did not feel one ounce of regret. I had stuck to my regimen and still had a lot of fun. I had done everything the way I wanted to and I was looking forward to getting home and finishing my last two weeks with a bang!
