The Champions' Supplement Solution

"Supplements are like using a weight belt for heavy lifting," says Champion Mike Harris. "They won't do the work for you, but they will help a little bit with the results when you do the work. I suppose a Challenge could be done without using supplements, but the results and the entire experience are better with them." Supplements are exactly that supplements. They are simply nutrients in a form that is concentrated, convenient and targeted. They are something you take to complete or add to what you normally eat. Whether it's the multi-vitamin you swallow with your morning juice or the sports nutrition bar you munch between meals, supplements enhance and improve your diet, providing both a physiological edge and nutritional insurance.

As Mike Harris says so well, Champions and Challengers alike will attest to the effectiveness and convenience of smart supplements. The two supplements most of us used (and continue to use) are protein and creatine. Let's understand how they work and why they've been the secret to the success of countless Champions and Challengers.

Supplements have enabled us not only to achieve Body-for-LIFE success but also to improve our health. Supplements can help build muscle, increase endurance and support the loss of fat. They can also help bolster the immune system and ward off disease. "Doing a 12-week Challenge without using any supplements is kind of like buying a brand-new car and not cleaning it or keeping it maintained," Mike continues. "Why would you go to a lot of trouble and effort to do a great Challenge, and fail to do the one thing that will safely and effectively maximize your Challenge results for you?"

Champion Rena Reese used to think supplements were only for bodybuilders, and the elderly. "I volunteered in a nursing home in high school," Rena says, "and I used to pop the tops on the patients' nutrition drinks and put straws in for them. Yes, that's it bodybuilders and old folks. Very few of us get what we need from whole foods each day. You'd have to pay such close attention to be sure you were meeting the needs of your body that you'd have little time to do anything else. Thank goodness for supplements someone else did the work and we benefit."

"In addition to the the mental part, the physical part of the Body-for-LIFE program is like a pyramid 70 percent nutrition, 20 percent exercise, and the top 10 percent is supplements," says Champion Dan Harris. "I believe without supplements, there is no top."

Nutrition Insurance Liquid Meal Replacements

The linchpin of Body-for-LIFE is eating six times a day. But no matter how conscientious you are, that can be a tall order.

This is why countless Champions and Challengers have turned to EAS, the maker of Myoplex® and the company Bill Phillips helped create. He knew there was a need for meal replacements as part of a balanced nutrition program. He also believed in providing supplements of the highest quality. It was that desire that led to the creation of Myoplex. Formulated as an optimal nutritional meal replacement to complement the Body-for-LIFE program, daily nutrition products such as Myoplex can help take the guesswork out of everyday nutrition, especially when you don't have time to prepare a whole-food meal. Many Champions consider these products to be the foundation of our nutrition programs.

"Meal replacements were a requirement for me in order to complete my Challenge successfully," Finalist Cheryl Muhr says. "I knew from the first day that I would never stick with any program that required me to cook six meals a day. I went to the Body-for-LIFE Web site and read what all of the previous Champions were doing. They all mentioned protein shakes, and so I stocked up on those before I even began. "The bars and shakes were the single greatest reason I never cheated during my Challenge. I always kept the ready-to-drink shakes and bars in my purse so if I was some place where unauthorized food was calling my name, I could reach for my shake or bar and stand firm in my commitment."

"As a pilot flying international routes, I carry a lot of luggage with me, and it's not always convenient to pack a lot of supplements," says Runner-up George Nolly. "I've found that meal-replacement bars don't take up much room, so I always have them in my flight bag. When I ‘deadhead' on an airline flight, they frequently don't offer much more than pretzels, so I break out a bar when it's time to eat." A significant portion of Champions and Challengers drink one or two Myoplex meal-replacement shakes a day, in addition to three to four balanced whole-food meals. Here's another secret: the best time to take a Myoplex is within 30 minutes of an intense workout. After a sweat-filled session hitting your 10s, your muscles are primed and ready to uptake nutrients. The protein and carbohydrates in Myoplex are shuttled to your cells and help enhance recovery and growth.

"Myoplex shakes helped me lose 52 pounds in 12 weeks," says Champion Andrew Crouch. "They taste great, fill my stomach and give me the nutrients I need to fill my body after an intense workout." "Supplementing after weight training is something I didn't learn until after my first Challenge," says Champion Jen Weatherman, "and I wish I'd understood its importance earlier. I believe I could have gained more muscle. Now, after lifting weights, I nourish my muscles by breaking open a packet of chocolate cream Myoplex Deluxe."

When traveling, George Nolly uses a tip he learned from Porter Freeman. "I just pour some water in the Myoplex shake packet and make Myoplex pudding." Couples Champion Doug Cox relied on Myoplex to help him get the nutrition he needed while running a hectic chiropractic practice. "With my busy work schedule, I could not stop to refuel with a snack or small meal between the three major meals," he says. "With meal replacements, I could maintain my blood sugar levels, and supplement my protein."
